Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism

Thyroid conditions can have a variety of symptoms and causes. Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the body is exposed to excess levels of the thyroid hormones, thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Hypothyroidism, however, results from underactivity of the thyroid. Both are very serious conditions that require medical treatment.

The skilled professionals at Diabetes & Endocrine Specialists Inc. offer quality care for many diseases of the endocrine system. We are committed to excellence and compassion in the science of healing.

Hyperthyroidism

In early stages or mild forms, hyperthyroidism might not cause recognizable symptoms. However, when symptoms do appear, they typically cause discomfort, disability, and if not treated, can even lead to death. Some of the many symptoms include:

  • Increased heart rate, often above 100 beats per minute (bpm)
  • Anxiety, irritability
  • Trembling hands
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Increased sensitivity to warm temperatures and a tendency to perspire easily
  • Weak muscles

Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism may not cause recognizable symptoms either. Our bodies have the ability to compensate for a failing thyroid by increasing stimulation to the gland. A reduction in thyroid hormone production slows the body’s metabolism, which can create a number of symptoms, such as:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Memory loss and forgetfulness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Brittle hair and nails
  • Sore muscles

Glandular diseases present themselves in myriad ways. Your disease may not be easy to identify through symptoms alone. Dr. Eiriny Eskander confidently diagnoses and treats diseases of the endocrine system that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Treatment Options for Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism

Hyperthyroidism treatments depend upon cause and severity as well as other conditions present with the patient. Dr. Eiriny Eskander is experienced in the management of thyroid diseases and will work with you to find the best treatment available. Treatment options may include:

  • Antithyroid drugs, such a propylthiouraprcil and methimazole
  • Radioactive iodine treatment
  • Surgical removal of the thyroid
  • Temporary beta-adrenergic blocking agents

Hypothyroidism is generally treated with a daily dose of levothyroxine. This is a replacement for a hormone normally produced by the thyroid. It can take several months to notice improvement since thyroid hormones act slowly. Proper dosage is essential for patient health; too much can cause symptoms resembling hyperthyroidism. Too little of the hormone may allow symptoms to return.

Management of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism requires careful monitoring and ongoing care from a physician experienced with these types of disorders. Diabetes & Endocrine Specialists will work to find the best treatment options for you and your condition. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Eiriny Eskander to find a treatment plan that works for you.
